Guwahati: Demand To Declare Guru Nanak School Property Of Sikh Community

GUWAHATI: The Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, famously known as ‘Sikh Manidr’, has demanded that the Sri Guru Nanak School located at Sharab Bhatti area of Guwahati be declared as a property of the ‘Sadh Sangat’, or Sikh community.

The Sikh Mandir committee has alleged that the premises of Sri Guru Nanak School have been used as a godown by a commercial entity. The committee claims that about 7 bighas of land within the school campus have been used in this way for years.

"The school should be run by learned intellectuals of the Sikh community rather than businessmen," the committee said in an official statement.

Allegations of illegal occupancy of the Guru Nanak School continue to be levelled for several years now. Committee members said that the matter was first discovered and raised in 2014.

"Attempts were made earlier to close down this school, one of the oldest non-Assamese schools in Guwahati, and use the plot for real estate," a member of the committee said.

"We demand that this long-standing issue is hampering the institution that hardly has any Sikh students now. We have to reinstate the lost glory of this school and need the issues to be resolved soon," the committee member said.
