GUWAHATI: The Cotton University Students’ Union Elections 2023 witnessed candidates successfully winning key positions without affiliating with any political parties.
In this distinctive election, several candidates managed to secure their victories independently or by forming alliances, demonstrating that political affiliations were not a deciding factor for the voters' choices.
Notably, the unaffiliated alliance of RKB Hostel and NBD Hostel registered the victory of seven successful candidates, indicative of their collective influence in the elections.
The candidates who emerged victorious from the unaffiliated RKB Hostel-NBD Hostel alliance in the Cotton University Students’ Union Election 2023 are Himangshu Kumar Das (President), Akshayata Das (Vice President), Javed Akhtar (General Secretary), Gargi Sarma (Assistant General Secretary), Mapani Lamgu (Secretary, Minor Games), Suraj Mahanta (Court Member), and Shristi Chandilya (Girls Common Room Secretary), highlighting the voters' preference for candidates who chose not to associate with political parties.
In the General Secretary race, Javed Akhtar emerged victorious with 982 votes, defeating Gunjan Deka, who received 833 votes.
For the position of Vice President, Akshayata Das secured a victory with 908 votes, surpassing Violina Borboruah, who garnered 831 votes.
The new Assistant General Secretary Gargi Sarma achieved an overwhelming win with 1,491 votes, marking an impressive 800+ vote difference compared to the runner-up, Siba Basumatary from SRB Hostel.
In the race for Debating and Symposium Secretary, Ankita Sarma Bordoloi triumphed against Sagarika Baruah.
Mamrez Ali was elected as the Boys’ Common Room Secretary, while Srinjana Sharma was chosen as the Editor. For the position of Cricket Secretary, Karan Sharma was successfully elected.
On October 17, a significant number of students from diverse academic disciplines exercised their democratic right by actively participating in the student elections at Cotton University.
A total of 2,469 students cast their votes, shaping the future leadership of this prominent academic institution.
