GUWAHATI: The All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) has called for a 24-hour Chakka Bandh from 5 AM on October 3. However, city life seems to go on as usual without much hassle or disturbance.
According to reports, AAMTA has been demanding for fare hike after the surge in the price of diesel and vehicle registration fee.
vehicles have been moving along the busy Guwahati-Shillong road as usual and other parts of the city.
Ranjit Boruah, a citizen of Guwahati said, "I have my own vehicle and I have to go to work hence; its Chakka Bandh, not Assam Bandh, so my work will be done."
Although a few of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses are plying but they are unable to cater the public waiting at the bus stops.
Another senior citizen, Habibur Rahman said, "I wanted to go to my bank to withdraw money but had to return back as I didn't see any public transport vehicles."
Speaking to media, AAMTA state vice president Bhaben Bhattacharyya said that earlier Assam Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary assured of the fake hike, however, nothing has been done till now.
It is to be mentioned that earlier, the Gauhati High Court had directed the police to lodge FIRs against organisations that call and enforce for bandhs.
The court also observed that “general public continue to suffer the depredations of the bandh organizers so much so that even doctors attending to their duties have not been spared."
