Guwahati: Ahead of Durga Puja, Police Detain 68 Unauthorized Tenants

GUWAHATI: Ahead of Durga Puja, city police on Monday, September 23 launched a drive in Birubari area of Guwahati to identify unauthorised tenants.

Speaking to the media, inspector-in-charge of Birubari outpost, Jagadish Kalita said that the detained tenants and house owners were asked to produce documents for verification but failed to do so. Hence, suspecting their involvement in criminal activities, these tenants were detained.

It is to be mentioned that earlier, a team from Chandmari and Geetanagar police station launched a drive and identified 91 tenants who were staying in rented premises in Maila Tanki area in Bhaskar Nagar locality without proper verification papers in which 5 were arrested.

Speaking to G Plus, officer-in-charge of Chandmari police station, Mridul Borah said, "Owners have allegedly said that they always ask their tenants to provide identify proofs and other details, however, they fail to collect it later."

Meanwhile, the drive against unauthorised tenants has been initiated in all areas across the city and all the respective police stations will be conducting the drive.

The tenant and servant verification aims to detect criminal background, if any, and also to maintain a database of people living under a certain vicinity.
