Guwahati: 50 Years Old Markets To Be Declared Heritage Markets By GMC

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will be reportedly declaring markets of the city that are at least 50 years old as Heritage Markets.

The matter was discussed in the recent 18th Town Vending Committee (TVC) meeting held on March 10.

As per sources, a list of such natural and heritage markets is to be prepared before the next TVC meeting. All such markets that are over half a century old and are registered with the Corporation will be declared as Heritage Markets and made into authorised vending zones.

Additionally, the GMC will start the process of identification and selection of 8 new vending zones in an expedited manner. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to be developed for the selection and relocation of street vendors to these zones.

Currently, there are eight designated vending zones in Guwahati - Ganeshguri Wholesale Gali, Barbari VIP Road, near Meghdoot Bhawan, Uzan Bazaar in front of the GMC office, Fancy Bazaar Phool Gali, AT Road at Col J Ali Road, Under Chandmari Flyover, and the mezzanine floor of the GMC multi-storied building at Fancy Bazaar. A total of 599 vendors can be accommodated in these spaces.
