GUWAHATI: The sudden protest against the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Parliament which ignited in the late hours of December 12 snowballed into a destructive movement.

Apart from burning down state government machineries, the common people were impacted the most as they did not get time to arrange or think about food and supplies in the heat of the moment.

With the government decision to impose curfew, the citizens of Guwahati were left in dire straits with regard to their household provisions.

Although the curfew was relaxed during the early hours of the day, goons impersonating as protestors threw a scare into the shopkeepers and forced them to close their shops in various markets of Guwahati.

“My neighbours told me that the vegetables and fish markets are open. In the market I was heckled by some of the goons who told me to fight against the CAB and stop buying food,” said a senior citizen in Ganeshguri area.

According to reports, a few miscreants and anti-social elements took advantage of the situation and started to create disturbance in the residential areas of Guwahati thereby also attacking the vendors and shopkeepers.

It is not clear when the markets will return to complete normalcy given the intermittent curfews being imposed daily.
