GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has penalised two residents of Adabari for obstructing footpaths, issuing fines of ₹500 and ₹2,000 on Friday, April 18. The action was part of the civic body’s ongoing enforcement drive to ensure public spaces remain accessible to pedestrians.

GMC posted about the penalties on social media platform X, warning that encroachment of footpaths would invite strict action. In its statement, the corporation said, “If you block footpaths, we will take action. Today, GMC imposed penalties of ₹2,000/- and ₹500/- on two Adabari residents for encroaching footpaths and inconveniencing pedestrians. Public spaces are for everyone – let’s keep them accessible.”
Earlier, on 8 April, GMC had fined a resident of B.N. Saikia Road ₹3,000 for disposing of garbage on the road, as part of its efforts to maintain civic cleanliness and enforce municipal regulations.
