GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is collecting unused and unsold banana trees from Diwali celebrations to provide a special treat for elephants in local zoos and reserve forests.

Marking a thoughtful initiative, the corporation has coordinated with local vendors and residents to gather unused and unsold banana trees at one of its open-ground premises on October 31. These trees have been segregated, cleaned, loaded into trucks and sent for consumption of elephants in the Assam State Zoo and the Garbhanga Reserve Forest.
“Our elephants deserve a Diwali treat too,” posted GMC on social media platform X.
“We have checked and cleaned every leaf multiple times,” shared an official, “because we wanted to make sure that there were no bamboos or other toxic substances in the elephant fodder.”
This decision from the GMC aligns with an ulterior initiative to reduce organic waste post-Diwali, thereby creating a sustainable use for the surplus greenery at the same time.
