Gauhati University to Conduct Examinations Online After Students Condemn Offline Mode

GUWAHATI: After repeated requests as well as complaints from students about Gauhati University's decision to conduct offline examinations for final semester students, the university on 8th September issued a fresh notification stating that the exams will now be held online.

The notification stated that "the Postgraduate (PG) Final Examinations of Gauhati University for the year 2020, which is to start from September 2020, will be held in the Online Mode. The Undergraduate (UG) Examinations will be held both in the online and offline mode."

The notice that was uploaded on the university website also mentioned that the detailed new SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for the new modes will be published by the Controller of Examinations, Gauhati University soon.

"This is as per review made today i.e. on 08.09.2020, in view of the current pandemic situation in the state of Assam," the notice stated.

Earlier G Plus had reported about the students of the university as well as the colleges affiliated to GU, of both the undergraduate and post graduate level, miffed by the university's decision to hold the exams offline amid the pandemic situation.

Apart from expressing concern over the mode of exams, the students have also mentioned that the dates of the final exams coincide with that of many entrance exams that are conducted by the central universities of the country.

Reportedly, over 30 percent of the examination centres are presently used as quarantine centres or covid care centres. Further, the current situation has also made it unsafe for outstation students to return to Guwahati for the examinations.

When G Plus reached out to the Gauhati University administration enquiring about their stance in this regard, Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice-Chancellor of GU refused to answer to any questions regarding the conduct of final examinations.

Dr Hemanta Kr Nath, Registrar of Gauhati University, stated that the dates of exams have collided earlier as well. As for the mode of examination, Dr Nath stated that the feedbacks and suggestions had been taken by the Controller of Examinations from all the concerned colleges before the schedule was set and announced.
