Gauhati University Mourns the Demise of Former VC Prof. Okhil Kumar Medhi


GUWAHATI: Former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Gauhati University (GU), Prof. Okhil Kumar Medhi, has left for his heavenly abode on February 2 at the age of 69.
 


The renowned academician and educator had been battling with health issues for a  long time.


He was one of the pioneers in the field of Bio-inorganic Chemistry. His academic excellence is highly respected among peers with more than 100 research papers published, patents and more than 20 PhD research scholars.


Prof. Medhi joined at the Department of Chemistry, Gauhati University as Reader in 1982. He was the first to set up an electrochemical research station in the northeast. 


He was known to bring new radical and modern changes in the education system which have benefitted the entire student community of North-east India. 


Condoling his demise, Dr. Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice Chancellor of GU told G Plus, “He was the Vice Chancellor from 2008 to 2013, and during this period he had contributed immensely for the varsity. He initiated a lot of developmental projects and helped in setting up the GU Institute of Science and Technology. The losses in Prof. Okhil Kumar Medhi’s demise cannot be measured. He uplifted the academic as well as the economic conditions of the university as the VC. He will always be in our prayers.”


Prof. Medhi leaves behind his wife Prof. Chitrani Medhi and two daughters Indrani Medhi and Ragini Medhi.
