GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has ruled to allow the Panchayat election process in Assam to move forward, despite ongoing legal challenges concerning the delimitation of Gaon Panchayats. Several writ petitions were filed, alleging that the authorities violated the Assam Panchayat Act and its regulations during the delimitation process.

The petitioners requested a temporary stop to the process and the cancellation of the final delimitation list. The court listened to arguments from both the petitioners and the state representatives, including the Advocate General and the State Election Commission.
The court made it clear that its orders from December 17, 2024, applied only to the petitioners in nine specific writ petitions and did not affect other pending cases. The court acknowledged the constitutional obligation to hold Panchayat elections within the designated timeframe and addressed additional writ petitions brought up during the hearing, stating that each would be evaluated on its own merits.
The court has set WP(C) No. 48/2025 for further proceedings and has issued notices to the relevant parties involved. Despite the ongoing legal issues, the court's ruling allows the Panchayat election process to continue as scheduled.
