GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has resolved to hold a peaceful sit-in on March 24 as mark of protest. A requisition by some members requesting a review of the Bar’s opposition to the relocation was also rejected, reaffirming the GHCBA’s firm stance against the move.

The GHCBA has reaffirmed its opposition to the proposed relocation of the Gauhati High Court to Rangmahal, North Guwahati. In an Extra-Ordinary General Body Meeting (EOGM) held on Wednesday, March 19, the association decided against participating in the proposed committee overseeing the judicial infrastructure at the new site.

The meeting followed a discussion held on March 13, between the Hon’ble Chief Justice, other judges of the High Court, and representatives of the GHCBA, the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim, and the All Assam Lawyers Association (AALA). The General Body of the GHCBA unanimously resolved not to be part of any committee linked to the shifting process, citing concerns over lack of prior consultation with the Bar.

The Association has also sought a copy of the Full Court’s resolution on the proposed relocation and has demanded an explanation on why such a crucial decision was taken without consulting the legal fraternity, which it described as a key stakeholder in the judicial system.

Additionally, the GHCBA ratified the Executive Committee's resolution condemning a recent meeting between the Hon’ble Chief Justice, his companion judge, Suman Shyam, and the Hon’ble Chief Minister at the State Guest House in Koinadhara. The Bar expressed strong objections to any discussions on the High Court’s shifting being conducted behind closed doors without transparency.

The GHCBA reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of the legal community and ensuring that any decisions affecting the High Court’s future are made through proper consultation and transparency.
