Garba Enters UNESCO’s List Of Intangible Cultural Heritage Of Humanity

 

GUWAHATI: On a momentous occasion for India's cultural heritage, the vibrant and traditional dance form 'Garba of Gujarat' has been included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by UNESCO. 

This recognition was announced during the 18th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage that is being held from December 5 to 9, 2023, in Kasane, Botswana.

The inclusion of 'Garba of Gujarat' marks the 15th element from India to be honoured on this esteemed list, emphasising its significant role as a unifying force that fosters social and gender inclusivity. Rooted in ritualistic and devotional traditions, Garba brings together people from diverse backgrounds, embodying a vibrant living tradition that continues to thrive.

The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has been lauded for its commitment and efforts towards the safeguarding, promotion, and preservation of India's rich intangible cultural heritage. 

The Evaluation Body of the 2003 Convention praised India for its comprehensive dossier and outstanding supporting material, acknowledging Garba as an element that champions unity in diversity and cultivates social equality among varied communities. 

UNESCO's recognition is expected to significantly elevate the global visibility and authenticity of the Garba dance form.

Alongside India, this year's Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) included Angola, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Czechia, Ethiopia, Germany, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Republic of Korea, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
