From CCTV Installation To Riverfront Beautification - Vision For Smart Guwahati Unveiled

GUWAHATI: A comprehensive vision for the development of Guwahati, was unveiled on January 1, 2024 highlighting the key initiatives to enhance smart infrastructure and revolutionise the transportation sector.

The initiatives were outlined by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing the officials from the Guwahati Smart City and Transport Department.

The key initiatives include:

-City-Wide CCTV Installation: Talking about the paramount importance of bolstering security, CM called for the installation of CCTV cameras throughout Guwahati. This initiative seeks to enhance public safety and serve as a deterrent against criminal activities.

-Remote Issuance of Driving Licenses and Fitness Certificates: CM Sarma also advocated for hassle-free experiences in obtaining driving licenses and fitness certificates. His proposal aims to eliminate the need for physical visits to government offices, enabling citizens to apply for and receive these documents remotely.

-Revitalising Guwahati's Riverfront: A picturesque transformation of Guwahati's riverfront, with a focus on improving its aesthetic appeal, has been envisioned by the Assam Government. Pointing to the potential of the Bharalu area near Shukleshwar Temple, CM Sarma urged the relocation of old ships and the introduction of new, state-of-the-art vessels for leisure and tourism.

CM Sarma took to X to put out, “I urge officials of Guwahati Smart City and Transport Dept to
-Install CCTVs across the city
-Issue Driving License & Fitness Certificate without the need to physically visit a government office 
-Enhance the aesthetic value of Guwahati river front”

The Chief Minister also expressed his desire to turn the Bharalu area into a vibrant terminal for modern ships, creating an attractive destination for residents and tourists alike. He emphasised the need to streamline bureaucratic processes by delegating licensing authority to certified driving institutes and establishing specialized fitness centres in every district.

CM Sarma additionally proposed a collaborative effort with educational institutions to offer post-graduate diplomas in driving. This initiative aims to streamline the licensing process and reduce dependence on government officers for enforcement.
