Gogoi had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 26, after which he was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

On August 31, his health condition deteriorated as his oxygen level dropped and he was given plasma therapy and thereafter discharged from the hospital on September 16, after testing negative for the virus.

However, on September 24, Tarun Gogoi's condition again deteriorated and he was shifted to the ICU of GMCH.

Further, on November 1, he was admitted to GMCH after he complained of breathing problems. Dr. Abhijeet Sarma, Superintendent of GMCH, informed media persons that Gogoi was restless and immediately shifted to ICU.

Although he was discharged after recovery, the former CM’s health deteriorated further and was put on a life support system. Earlier Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that Tarun Gogoi was suffering from multiple organ failure with only minor eye reflexes and minimal brain response.
