For The First Time Container Cargo Vessel is Set To Sail Through Pandu Ghat

GUWAHATI: In a bid to enhance connectivity via inland waterways, a container cargo vessel carrying a consignment of 53 TEUs is all set to sail through the Brahmaputra- National waterway-2 via Pandu Ghat for the first time.

TEU stands for Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit which can be used to measure a ship's cargo carrying capacity.

"Container movement is something that happens on high seas. On Indian rivers, this is very new and of course first on national waterway 2,” an Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) official said to TOI.

It is to be mentioned that the container cargo vessel MV Maheshwari carrying petrochemicals, edible oil and beverage will be flagged off from Haldia, in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal on November 4.

Two other vessels — MV Aai and MV Beki — will carry coal for Cement plant at Sonapur near Guwahati.

The vessel will reach IWAI’s Pandu terminal in Guwahati after 12-15 days, sailing through national waterway 1 (Ganga), national waterway 97 (Sunderban), Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route and finally national waterway-2 (Brahmaputra), travelling a distance of 1,425 KM.
