Guwahati: In a controversial statement the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha Dr. Parmananda Rajbongshi recently announced that not knowing the official language should debar anyone from getting a job in Assam.
“Won't let anyone work without the knowledge of mother tongue. We are against giving government jobs to those who can't use the Assamese language. To get a government job one has to at least know the official language, said Rajbongshi.
The President strongly believes that the Assamese identity and language is in danger and is almost about to be destroyed. The Assam Sahitya Sabha is taking this stand as it feels that without such steps the language might go into obscurity.
"At this moment we are clear that we have to safeguard our regional pride and identity which is in destruction mode, so we are not going to listen to anybody," thundered the President.
“We are announcing it so that everyone is aware of it. We have also requested the government in this regard that from the lowest grade job to the highest in the government sector, knowledge of the official language should be made mandatory,” said Rajbongshi.
