Footwear brand Bata fined Rs 9000 for charging customer Rs. 3 for carry bag

GUWAHATI: Footwear brand Bata has been fined a total of Rs. 9000 by a Chandigarh consumer forum after a customer was charged Rs. 3 for a paper bag. 

Dinesh Raturi had filed a complaint with a consumer forum after he brought a pair of shoes from the Bata store in Sector 22D on February 5. However, Bata refused all claims. 

Following the incident, the Chandigarh-based regulator said that it is the company’s duty to provide a free paper bag to its customers and that if they were so worried about the environment.

Bata was further directed by the regulator to pay a compensation of Rs. 3000 to the customer “for mental agony caused by the deficiency in services” and also to pay Rs. 5000 in the legal aid account of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
