Food Vendors Temporarily Evicted From Nearby Vicinity Of Nehru Park

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Wednesday evicted several roadside food stalls from the Cotton University Road in the Panbazar area of Guwahati, primarily the ones located in front of Nehru Park.

The vendors were asked to leave in the late afternoon, hours before the formal inauguration of the remodelled Nehru Park, which was done by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking to G Plus, a student of Cotton University has said, "These stalls have been here for a very long time, and we have been their regular customers. I think the shops have been removed because the Chief Minister is coming to inaugurate the Nehru Park."

"The eviction is temporary, and these vendors will return once the park is inaugurated and opened for the locals. We have requested these vendors to keep the area clean and litter-free," said a GMC source speaking to G Plus.

"We have asked them to set up their shops on the opposite side of the park so that the area remains clean," he added.

Nehru Park, a popular hangout joint for the locals, was closed for renovation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The park’s inauguration will provide the Guwahati residents with another recreational zone.
