BK Kakati Road, renowned as one of Guwahati's busiest thoroughfares due to its proximity to key offices like the DGP office and Labour Commissioner Office, is grappling with escalating congestion issues.
Particularly around the area opposite Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School, the surge in new food joints has attracted a swarm of patrons arriving in two-wheelers and four-wheelers, resulting in chaotic parking situations, especially during the evening rush starting from 7 PM daily. The narrow width of the road exacerbates the problem, causing significant traffic disruptions.
A regular commuter said, "I traverse this route daily on my way back home from the office. It's incredibly congested, particularly with parked vehicles near the food joints. The situation worsens on Saturdays and holidays due to increased foot traffic."
When questioned, representatives of the food joints shed light on the situation. One of them remarked, "Customers often park their vehicles, place their orders, collect their food, and then depart. We cannot ask them not to park here, because it would hamper our business."
Another commuter added, "Despite police enforcement against parking in this area, some patrons still disregard the regulations. Most of them usually pack their food and leave without consuming it on-site."
This anecdotal evidence underscores the persistent disregard for regulations despite periodic enforcement efforts by the traffic department.
The traffic police official of that area while talking to GPlus said, “We haven't designated any no-parking zones near the food joints yet. However, if any vehicle is observed causing disruption in traffic flow by parking in that area, we impose fines. Additionally, if any vehicle obstructs the road, we penalize the owner as well. We cannot declare an area as a no-parking zone arbitrarily; it must meet specific parameters.”
Designated No Parking Zone means any location which has been designated by By-Law as an area where parking is prohibited and authorized signs have been erected. This means, there isn't any law formed to make the area no parking zone.
When GPlus asked the GMC, why food joints without enough parking are allowed trade licenses, a senior official said, "We didn't give them trade licenses. A proposal to address this will be issued soon."
This statement by the GMC also throws light on how many food joints are operating without proper permission.
In cities, you'll find countless food joints where folks gather for a tasty bite. Especially in the evenings, these spots buzz with crowds seeking delicious yet affordable meals. Take the food galis, like the one near Cotton College in Panbazar – they're legendary for satisfying fast food cravings, drawing in scores of hungry youngsters. These places aren't just about good eats; they're lifelines for many, offering meals at prices that won't break the bank.
Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, it's crucial to remember a few things for everyone's convenience. When heading out to munch on treats, it's essential to park vehicles in designated areas. Blocking traffic flow not only causes headaches for other commuters but also poses safety risks.
