With Rongali Bihu just around the corner, Guwahati is slowly turning festive. From narrow lanes to wide fields, sounds of dhol, pepa and husori rehearsals reverberate as Bihu committees across the city prepare to welcome the Assamese New Year.
The celebrations will begin from April 13 and continue till April 16, with different localities lining up their own set of cultural evenings, competitions and star performances. Every year, the city’s neighbourhoods come alive with colourful stages, lights, food stalls and music and this year, the excitement is no different.
To get a closer look at how the city is getting ready, GPlus spoke to organisers from several Bihu committees across Guwahati. Here’s what their plans are:
Latasil
Latasil Bihu celebrations are set to begin on April 14 and will continue till April 17, with a colourful line-up of cultural programmes, folk performances, and star-studded evenings.
Speaking to GPlus, a member of the Latasil Bihu Committee said, “This year’s celebration will begin with the flag hoisting by Gautam Prasad Baruah at 10 AM on April 14. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will attend the event shortly after.”
The first day will also feature Diha Naam at 12 noon, followed by a cultural evening at 7:00 pm featuring noted singer Ramen Choudhury. Over the next few days, the stage will host performances by renowned artistes Simanta Shekhar and Kalpana Patowary.
Folk dances will be held throughout the celebration days. The grand Bihu Samagri event has been scheduled for April 17 at 8PM. The committee has set a budget of Rs 18 to 20 lakh for this year’s celebrations.
Chandmari
Chandmari is ready to ring in Bohag Bihu with four days of energetic celebrations from April 14 to 17, featuring traditional dance competitions and musical evenings.
The Chandmari Bihu Committee informed GPlus hat this year’s programme will include Bihu Nasoni and Assam Bihu performances on April 14 and 15, promising a vibrant display of Assamese folk culture.
A Husori Pratijugita (group Bihu competition) will take place on April 15, drawing teams from across the region. Prizes will be distributed on April 16 to honour the best performers.
On the musical front, popular singer Neel Akash is set to perform during the celebration, adding a festive note to the evenings.
Hengrabari
The Hengrabari Bihu Committee has lined up a two-day celebration on April 18 and 19, promising a festive blend of tradition, talent, and community spirit.
The celebrations will feature Bongeet and Adhunik Geet performances on April 18, along with various cultural events that bring the essence of Bihu alive. Popular artiste Nilakshi Neog will take the stage, adding a starry charm to the evening.
“There will be art competitions and traditional games as well. We are trying to create a space where people can celebrate their roots together,” a committee member told GPlus. The organisers are expecting a large turnout from the locality and beyond.
Ganeshguri
Ganeshguri is all set to welcome Rongali Bihu with a four-day celebration from April 14 to 17, bringing together music lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and families from across the city.
The highlight of the event will be the performance by singer Moumita Mitra on April 15. The Bihu committee has planned a range of programmes showcasing local talent, traditional dance forms, and community participation.
The event will be held at the Ganeshguri Bihu field, and entry is open to all.
Noonmati
The Noonmati Bihu Committee is all set to usher in the spirit of Rongali Bihu with a three-day celebration from April 14 to 16, promising evenings filled with music, community bonding, and cultural flavour.
This year’s line-up includes performances by popular artistes Kamalika Kashyap and Achurjya Borpatra, who are expected to draw large crowds. The celebrations will take place at the Noonmati field, which has already begun to buzz with preparations.
Geetanagar
Geetanagar is gearing up for a four-day Rongali Bihu celebration from April 14 to 17, packed with cultural activities, musical performances, and competitions that promise to entertain and engage.
Well-known singers Dipanwita Deka and Bishrut Saikia will perform during the event, adding vibrancy to the celebrations. Two major competitions—Asom Borbihuwoti and Nihu Husori—will also be held, drawing participants from across the city.
