GUWAHATI: Fishes imported from outside the state and sold at the local fish markets in Nagaon have been found to contain over 15% formalin.
In addition, 0.003 per cent cadmium and 0.15 per cent arsenic are detected in fish imported from outside the state and sold in the local fish markets.
It was discovered in a recent study conducted by an independent team from the Department of Biology at Nowgong College.
Under the direction of professors Bhuban Chandra Chutiya, Lalit Mohan Goswami, Jyotishmita Das, Priyanka Sarma, and Manash Pratim Bora, a group of research students from the relevant department completed the study within three months.
In a press release issued by the institution on Tuesday afternoon, it was stated that students collected samples from various local fish markets across the district and examined all the samples in all aspects at both the local laboratory and the laboratory in Guwahati, confirming the presence of these poisonous substances in fish sold at local fish markets in this area.
Bhuban Chandra Chutiya, the coordinator of the college's Internal Quality Assurance Cell, stated that the study aimed to educate district residents about the quality of food items, not to cause panic.
