GUWAHATI: On 3rd of June 2018 cyclists in Guwahati came out to celebrate World Bicycle Day together with the rest of the world.

The cycle rally was organised by Guwahati Cycling Community (GCC) - the largest cycling group of its kind in the region.

The rally started at 6 am from Dispur, near the Assam Tea Auction centre, and after riding for more than 30 km across the city concluded at the same place by 10 am. The GCC rally was supported and joined by cyclists from a few more cycle rallies that were happening around the city.

More than 100 cyclists from all across the city took part in the rally. Cyclists, both male and female, ranging from age 14 to 60 took part in the rally.

The rally also saw the participation of the Bicycle Mayor of Guwahati, Arshel Akhter and also Abhishek Gogoi, the talented young cyclist, from Assam, who has earned a place to participate in the 2019 Special Summer Olympics to be held in Abu Dhabi.

It needs to be mentioned that the United Nations had declared 3rd June as World Bicycle Day. The decision was taken on 12th April 2018 and this was the first time that 3rd of June was celebrated across the globe.

This decision will go a long way in promoting cycling in improving the health of the people as well as the environment we live in and also in reducing traffic congestion, deaths from vehicular accidents and reducing carbon emissions.
