GUWHATI: Indian Army General MM Naravane has announced the withdrawal of two battalion troops from northeast, while addressing the media in New Delhi on 29 January.

Naravane said that more troops would be withdrawn from the region in the next two-and-a-half years.

The Army Chief also announced that the counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations would soon be replaced by‘conventional warfare’.

He said  that “Two battalions (nearly 1500 troops) have already been taken out and once the Bodoland (Territorial Council) elections are over, we would reduce more troops. In the next 2-2.5 years we would concentrate fully on conventional warfare in the North east”.

It is to be mentioned that in four decades this is the first time that army troops would be withdrawn from the northeast.
