GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the name of the first giraffe calf on in Assam state zoo today. The newborn female giraffe is one month now.
Speaking to the media, CM Sarma shared insights into the giraffe's early days, expressing concern about the mother's initial inability to care for the newborn. Tushar Kulkarni, a conservationist from Thane, collaborated with the Assam state zoo staff to nurture the young giraffe during its crucial first month of life.
Sarma highlighted the collaborative effort and said, "Tushar Kulkarni, along with our dedicated zoo staff, played a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of the one-month-old giraffe."
The community engagement aspect was also emphasised as the public was invited to suggest names for the baby giraffe.
"After a lottery and selection, we have decided to name the giraffe 'Parijat,' a suggestion put forth by Priya Kalita," Sarma further stated.
A month back suggestions for names were sought from the public online, informed the state zoo divisional forest officer (DFO) and the suggestion of one of the participant Priya Kalita was selected.
