First All-Women CISF Battalion Approved By Union Home Ministry

GUWAHATI: For the first time, the Ministry of Home Affairs has reportedly approved the creation of an all-women battalion within the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), set to include over 1,000 personnel. The ministry’s sanction authorises the formation of this exclusive women's "reserve battalion," which will consist of 1,025 members under the leadership of a senior commandant, according to media reports.

Currently, women make up about 7 per cent of the CISF, which has a total workforce of approximately 180,000 personnel.

The CISF has already reportedly begun preparations for recruiting and training the new battalion and is also in the process of locating a headquarters for the unit. Sources indicate that the training programme will be tailored to equip this elite battalion for multiple roles, including VIP security, airport and metro security, and other high-profile responsibilities. The CISF currently operates 12 reserve battalions, which are staffed by both men and women.

With a significant presence in places frequented by women, such as 68 civil airports, the Delhi Metro, and major landmarks like the Taj Mahal and Red Fort, the CISF already deploys female officers in these locations.

The concept for an all-women battalion arose after Home Minister Amit Shah called for its formation during the CISF’s 53rd Raising Day event in March 2023.
