The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has extended the ban on the sale and use of all kinds of firecrackers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rule will be applied in the National Capital Region and all cities/towns in the country where the ambient air quality falls under the ‘poor’ and above category.
Air quality is considered to be poor when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is in between 301-400. Guwahati has recorded to have AQI of 172 as reported on 2nd of December last. This would mean the city would be outside the purview of the NGT order.
Earlier, NGT has directed all states and Union Territories to initiate drives to contain air pollution from all sources in view of the potential aggravation of COVID-19. As such, the tribunal has called for a firecracker ban in cities and towns where air quality during November falls under the 'poor' and above categories, PTI reported.
This is set to impact the use of firecrackers in the Christmas and New Year celebrations this year.
