The rally, which took place peacefully, turned controversial due to the alleged excessive use of tear gas by the Assam Police. The incident prompted the police to deploy a heavy amount of tear gas without provocation, reportedly affecting elderly individuals, children, and those with respiratory issues.

Alleging that the use of tear gas to create chaos was excessive and indiscriminate, the FIR highlights the violation of human rights and holds the Assam Police directly responsible for the incident. The complainant has urged authorities to initiate a thorough and independent investigation to ensure accountability.

Legal action under the relevant sections of the law and compensation for Mridul Islam’s family have also been demanded.

Mridul Islam, a resident of Boko, was an active participant in the rally when he collapsed due to the tear gas exposure. Despite efforts, he succumbed to the effects shortly after.
