F&CS raids shops for selling potatoes at higher rates

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Metro Food and Civil Supplies (F&CS) department had on June 4 seized 65.900 kg of two different variants of potato from a shop at the Dispur Supermarket for selling at a higher market price.

According to the bills submitted by the customers of the particular shop to the department, the seller was selling two variants of potato at the cost of Rs 30 per kg and Rs 25 per kg while, according to the department, decided profit margin to the potatoes were Rs 4 per kg only.

The officials, after the raid that was conducted at 5:30 pm, handed over the entire seized quantity of potatoes to the fair price shop run by Anima Deka where the potatoes were sold at a flat Rs 20 per kg.

This was not the first incident of shopkeepers charging higher rates for potatoes and onion as the department had conducted numerous such raids over the last two weeks.

The profit margin for Onion currently is, Rs 6 per kg.
