Either Let us Live or Shoot us: Guwahati Cab Drivers to Government

GUWAHATI: The All Assam CAB Operator Union along with the Ola, Uber and other Taxi cab drivers have staged protest against the Transport Department at the Borjhar Airport on 22 February.

They have raised 'go back' slogans against the BJP government as well as the Transpoprt Department "Let us live or shot us".

The protests came against the new rules set up by the Regional Transport Authority, that requires the taxi drivers to have a Guwahati permit, to drive around the city.

The drivers claimed that although they already have a three-state permit for Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya now the department have asked us to show a seperate permit for Guwahati, or would be fined anywhere between Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.

"Many drivers are mostly 'educated unemployed' and they have taken this up instead of waiting for government jobs. manu have mortgaged their land to buy the vehicle. The sudden implementation of these new rules has made it difficult for us to drive. If the government doesnot support the drivers, then the protests would turn violent and we have to committ suicide as a last resort," the protesters said.

They further said that if the government do not give any immediate measure then they would either have to join terrorists or take up other illegal means.
