Editorial | Voter's Dilemma

Be it the urban local body, Panchayat, Assembly or Lok Sabha elections, the voters are enthusiastic about choosing their leaders who will help them develop their area and improve their living conditions. The power to vote for your country is an important part of democracy. While many in our country are eligible to cast their vote, few are very enthusiastic about it. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the voter turnout was 67.11% which is the highest turnout in history. With every election, there has been a positive increase in voter turnout. Such an increase in voting is a positive welcome, as each and every vote counts for a better future of our country.

But as much as the voters are enthusiastic about choosing the leaders, are the leaders taking care of the voters? During every election many promises are made irrespective of which political party is backing the politico. In Guwahati there are many lanes, roads yet to be built, water supply projects yet to be completed.  Many drainage systems are yet to be constructed and these promises are made every election.  The political leaders visit every ward, village and area to woo the voters before the elections. After coming to power, the same voters have to run pillar to post to meet the elected leaders. Meeting the councillor, Panchayat or Zila Parishad members is not that challenging, but meeting the member of legislative assembly or the member of the Parliament is like meeting God.

The ongoing Lok Sabha elections again are sending the leaders to the doorstep of the voters with various promises, but after they win will they give an appointment to the same voter remains a question. The voters will keep voting every election with the same enthusiasm. The dilemma of the voter needs to be understood by the elected leaders.
