DTO Kamrup Metro Begins Special Ops To Recover Pending Taxes

GUWAHATI: On the directions of the Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma to collect all forms of pending revenue the Transport Department has also pulled up its socks.

The Kamrup (Metro) has launched Operation Sarkhar under the leadership of DTO Gautam Das on Friday. The mission is to collect taxes from those vehicles moving without paying taxes or having taxes overdue.

"The vehicle owners have been given extension seven times to pay the taxes by the Road Transport Ministry. Despite that the owners have failed to pay the taxes. The last date for filing the tax was October 31. Many vehicle owners are still driving without paying the taxes," said DTO Gautam Das.

In Guwahati over Rs 30 crore is due from private vehicles and Rs 100 crore is due from commercial vehicle owners.

"The government has already relaxed a lot of rules due to the pandemic but the public is not responding to the request. The transport department has set a target of collecting Rs 100 crore by March end. If the owners fail to comply then the vehicle registration will be cancelled and a case will be lodged," said Gautam Das.
