GUWAHATI: The Platinum Gong, a documentary celebrating the life and work of Lou Majaw, would be screened at The Lift-Off’s Filmmaker Sessions Online Film Festival.
The Lift-Off’s Filmmaker Sessions Online Film Festival will be available via Vimeo On-Demand from May 1 to May 15.
The documentary on Majaw, one of India’s longest-serving rock and roll artists, is directed by theatre artist, writer and musician Sattyakee Dcom Bhuyan and produced by Dipak Chandra Das.
The documentary shows the labour of love and passion of Majaw while showcasing the development of rock and roll culture in India.
What sets Lou Majaw apart is the profundity in his seemingly simple lyrics that belie that he grew up in poverty and endured hardships throughout his life.
Despite the odds, he has maintained the same enthusiasm and passion in his performances today that propelled him to record perhaps India’s first original English rock album, appropriately christened ‘Breakthrough’ with his band The Great Society in 1977-78.
In The Platinum Gong, one can witness Lou Majaw’s importance in developing a rock and roll culture in India through the tributes he receives from some of India’s foremost rock musicians.
The most glowing endorsement of Lou Majaw’s impact comes from Uday Benegal of Indus Creed fame, who has been at the forefront of shaping India’s nascent rock and roll scene since the mid-1980s.
In the documentary, Uday talks about Majaw with reverence, particularly mentioning his influence on impressionable young rockers such as himself many years ago.
