GUWAHATI: Senior Advocate Devajit Lon Saikia has been appointed as the Advocate General of Assam. He will succeed Prof. Romesh Ch. Borpatra Gohain whose tenure began on 20 November 2017.
G Plus spoke to Devajit Lon Saikia who has visioned to take forward his position with responsibility. "This is a high respect position and I will give my best for protecting the stature of the position," Saikia told G Plus.
The Cabinet Spokespersons had announced the appointment. Devajit Lon Saikia further thanked the Assam Chief Minister (CM) Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Cabinet Ministers of the state.
Earlier, Saikia was given the interim charge of Advocate General for two months from April to May 2017. He now joins the list of eminent personalities who have become the Advocate General of Assam including Rai Bahadur P.C. Dutta, Dr. F.A. Ahmed, A.M. Mazumdar, and many others.
Devajit Lon Saikia had been serving as the Secretary of Assam Cricket Association.
In India, an advocate general is a legal advisor to the state government. It is a Constitutional post and corresponds to that of the Attorney General for India at the union government level.
