Deputy Commissioners To Be Called District Commissioners In Assam

GUWAHATI: In a significant move aimed at streamlining administration and focusing on overall progress, the Assam government has renamed Deputy Commissioner (DC) to the District Commissioner.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held on Friday at the Janta Bhawan in Guwahati.

The state's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had earlier emphasized the need for DCs to prioritize development and refrain from being entangled in routine administrative tasks.

Under the new arrangement, district commissioners will have the authority to transfer gazetted and non-gazetted officials within their respective districts.

However, the transfer of gazetted officials will require the approval of the concerned guardian minister. This measure aims to maintain checks and balances while ensuring efficient personnel management.

Simultaneously, the government has decided to abolish the Office of the Divisional Commissioner and delegate its statutory powers to the principal secretary of the General Administration Department (GAD).

In this restructuring, employees and assets of the Divisional Commissioner's Office will be transferred to the respective District Commissioners, facilitating a more streamlined administrative setup.
