Delimitation Approved To Enhance Grassroots Governance In Assam

 

GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet, on Tuesday, October 8, approved the recommendations of the District Delimitation Commission to reorganise Gaon Panchayats, Anchalik Panchayats, Zilla Parishad constituencies, and development blocks in a move aimed at improving grassroots governance.

The delimitation process will apply to all districts except those governed by the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, ensuring equitable representation and effective administration.

As part of the changes, the total number of Gaon Panchayats will decrease slightly from 2,197 to 2,193. There are 219 nos. of Development Blocks in Assam. Out of which 181 nos. fall under General Areas and 38 numbers fall under Sixth Scheduled Areas. The total no. of Blocks within the State remains the same after Reorganisation Delimited Zilla Parishad Constituencies.

The Cabinet also approved a reduction in the number of Zilla Parishad constituencies from 420 to 397, in view the provisions of Section 65 (1) of the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994 (as amended).
