AFSPA Extended In 4 Districts Of Assam For Six More Months

GUWAHATI: The "Disturbed Area" status in Assam has been extended for four districts—Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, and Sivasagar—for another six months, effective from October 1. This decision, made under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), was confirmed in a notification issued by the Assam Home and Political Department.

The original declaration of these districts as disturbed under AFSPA was made in April 2024. Despite notable improvements in Assam's internal security due to proactive counter-insurgency efforts over recent years, concerns about the potential impact of disturbances in neighbouring Bangladesh on the state's law and order prompted the government to recommend the continuation of AFSPA in these areas.

After reviewing the Assam government's proposal, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) agreed to maintain the current status quo for another six months. This means the extended period will continue until March 2025, unless the government decides to withdraw the declaration earlier.
