The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has decided to remove all the decorative lights from the entire stretch of RG Baruah Road from the next month.

The initiative has been taken to ensure public safety during the monsoon season.

Several cases of electrocution took place in the road last year.

The decision came after a report by the joint team comprising of officials from GMDA, GMC and APDCL, conducted an inspection of the area and submitted its report in favour of removing the lights which might be hazardous during the monsoon.

The joint inspection team has also suggested that all the decorative lights on the light poles spread throughout the city should be disconnected during bad weather conditions to avoid any untoward incident.

The team unanimously agreed to suggest to the authorities to disconnect all the decorative lightings from Ganeshguri to the GCC point from May 1 till the end of rainy season. The APDCL has also suggested installing some security measures like installation of terminal box to protect the connection from rain water and to use miniature circuit breaker, residual current circuit breaker, etc., as protection against electric shock.
