GUWAHATI: City police are on high alert to prevent any untoward incident which may lead to spread of coronavirus in Guwahati.
Though there is no specific input of any arrest made during the first day of the lockdown, however, police along with CRPF are keeping no stones unturned to keep Guwahatians off the street.
Speaking to G Plus, officials of Hatigaon police station said, "We are not allowing anyone to loiter on the roads, and if found, we are asking them the reason of moving around."
"Till now we have just allowed a couple of cars to pass-by on medical grounds after checking valid documents supporting the case," he added.
Meanwhile police have also used 'Lathi’ (Stick) to keep unruly youths off the streets. Visuals have come from Rajgarh area of the city wherein cops have questioned and punished several youths loitering on the streets during the country-wide lockdown.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, although a complete lockdown has been announced, cars and two-wheelers have been seen plying through main roads and by-lanes in various locations of the city in a passive manner.
Armed with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer, cops are being advised to keep their distance from others when possible.
Across the country, all establishments have been shut down including educational institutes, restaurants and only essential services are being allowed to function. People have been advised nit to move out of their houses to slow the spread of the virus.
In India, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 562 (including 40 cured), according to the Union Health Ministry. While in Northeast a 50-year-old man from Mizoram was tested positive of coronavirus on March 25, making it the second confirmed case in the northeast.
Earlier, on March 24, a 23-year-old girl from Imphal (west) was identified as the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Manipur.
