Crime Against Women Highest In Assam For 5 Years In A Row

GUWAHATI: Assam recorded the highest rate of crime against women in the entire country, as per the National Crime Record Bureau’s “Crime in India” report for last year published on Tuesday, August 30. 

The crime rate in the Crime in India 2021 report is calculated per-lakh of population. 

Assam’s rate of crime against women stands at 168.3, way higher than the national average of 63.3. Also, there has been an increase of crime rate from 154.3 in 2020. 

A total of 29046 cases of crime against women were registered in the State in 2021. 

The State is followed by Delhi and Odisha, with a 147.6 and 137.8 rate of crime against women respectively . 

In contrast to Assam’s numbers, another northeastern state, Nagaland has reported the lowest crime rate against women in 2021 at 5.1. It also had the lowest number of cases, that is only 54 for the entire year. 

In a tweet, DCW (Delhi Commission for Women) chief Swati Maliwal said, "According to NCRB data, crimes against women increased by 41 per cent in 2021 and the crimes against children increased by 32 per cent".
