GUWAHATI: A couple from Assam, Paramita Sarma and Mahzin Mukhtar, have started a school, ‘Akshar’ where they take plastic waste as fees from students to provide them a quality education. By doing this, they are ensuring a better future for the students as well as the environment.
Mukhtar is from New York and came to India after he was invited to Assam by Tez Harazika, the son of Bharat Ratna, Bhupen Hazarika.
The school started in 2016 with 20 children, but now has more than 100 children between the age group of 4 to 15 years. Most of these children come from poor families, and were working as daily-wage labourers. Thus, in an effort to help them, the school has taken up the responsibility to take care of these children until they get a proper job.

In the primary level, the school follows the Cambridge English and Mathematics guidelines and in the secondary level, the students start their training for National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) board examinations, which allows them to get certificates for class X and XII.
Mukhtar mentioned that they has also been invited to the United Nations in 2017 to present and share with the world their unique method of teaching.
The duo is also working with an NGO, “Education Alliance”, in Delhi which took them into a government school there and helped the teachers and staff of the school to adopt the couple’s system of schooling and teaching.
