GUWAHATI: A courier agency employee and a police official were found in cahoots in a mobile phone smuggling case in Guwahati. A breakthrough was made by Paltan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati as they seized a consignment of used mobile phones suspected to be involved in smuggling operations to Bangladesh.
The case, registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including Section 379/120B, and added with Section 387/411 IPC, is currently being investigated by the Crime Branch.

The seizure occurred following a tip-off, leading to the interception of the consignment at a courier agency located in Paltan Bazar. Upon verification, it was revealed that the mobile phones had either been stolen or snatched from various locations, including Delhi, before being transported to Assam with the intention of smuggling them into Bangladesh.
During the course of the investigation, Bhabesh Sharma, an employee of the Guwahati Courier Agency, was apprehended. Shockingly, it was uncovered that ASI Krishna Upadhyai of Paltan Bazar Police Station was allegedly complicit with the smuggling gang.

It is alleged that ASI Upadhyai accepted a sum of ₹13 lakh from the gang and even resorted to kidnapping two of the accused under the guise of police action. The accused were allegedly held in a hotel forcibly until they paid the demanded amount.
Following the evidence collected during the inquiry, ASI Upadhyai was arrested by the Crime Branch in connection with the case. Further investigations are underway to unravel the full extent of the smuggling operation and to bring all perpetrators to justice.
