CM Sonowal Should Resign, Seek Fresh Mandate: Assam Congress on SI Exam Paper Leak

GUWAHATI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has demanded that the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal should resign on moral grounds and seek a fresh mandate from the people of Assam in view of the state Government’s failure to fulfil all major electoral promises and exposure of multiple recruitment-related scandals, including the latest sub-inspector of police (SI) recruitment scam under the Home Department.

Saikia condemned the lathi-charge by police officials against Congress leaders and workers, as well as their subsequent detention, after they assembled at the Manabendra Sarma Complex in Dispur to stage a democratic protest against the SI recruitment scam on September 30. He termed the police’s action of barging inside the Congress’ office campus to beat up the protestors as an assault on the citizens’ Constitutional right to assemble and protest peacefully and demanded an inquiry into the incident.

Saikia stated that after coming to power, the government headed by Sarbananda Sonowal had been depriving eligible youths of the state by operating illegal syndicates pertaining to recruitment in various government departments and the SI recruitment scam was the latest example of this racket. The nefarious racket was being operated from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and various leaders and workers of the BJP were involved in it, he further added.
