"I am in Dibrugarh today. I met Amritpal Singh. He has confirmed to me that he will contest elections from Khadoor Sahib," Khalsa affirmed.
Sources indicate that a mainstream political party is contemplating to provide support to Amritpal Singh's candidacy from the sidelines.

Fugitive preacher Amritpal Singh, whom the government labels a Khalistani-Pakistan agent, has been facing a number of charges along with his associates. Several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants are registered against him.

On an early Sunday morning of April 23, Amritpal was arrested from Rode village in Moga, and was then brought to Air Force Station in Bathinda by the Punjab Police, before being shifted to Dibrugarh Central Jail. As per reports, the reason for shifting Amritpal and his aides to Assam instead of being taken to Punjab or Delhi jails could be the presence of other gangsters familiar to the separatist group.

Under Indian laws, a prisoner cannot vote but can contest elections until convicted.
