GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 12 and submitted a memorandum urging him to revive the two paper mills of the state – Nagaon and Cachar.
Operations at the Panchgram Paper Mill in Cachar suspended in September 2015 and that in Jagiroad Paper Mill suspended in March 2017. The employees of these paper mills have not received their salaries since 2016 and many of them have committed suicide.

In his memorandum Sonowal reminded the Prime Minister about BJP’s poll promises to revive the two paper mills in 2016. He also informed the Prime Minister through the memorandum that the employees of the paper mills have approached the National Company Law Tribunal and thereafter National Company Law Appellate Tribunal in this regard.
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), in its verdict, prohibited the shut-down of two paper mills in Assam. The three-judge bench of NCLAT headed by Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya ordered the prohibition of liquidation of the two paper mills under Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited in Jagiroad and Cachar.

I extended him greetings on behalf of the people of Assam for his second tenure as India's Prime Minister and discussed the roadmap for Assam's rapid development," CM Sonowal wrote in a social media post.
