City police recovers Ugratara temple lamp, idol still missing

GUWAHATI: A metallic lamp that was stolen along with the centuries-old astadhatu idol from the Ugratara temple was recently recovered by police from a scrap yard in the Chabipul area on late Thursday night.

The temple management committee have identified the lamp.

It is to be mentioned that police has carried out search operations in various parts of the city, including below the Saraighat bridges and in some dumping sites in search of the centuries-old astadhatu idol.

According to the police, the accused apprehended in the case revealed that they had thrown the idol into the Brahmaputra River. 

However, police are yet to acknowledge the truth of the statement.

Till now, several persons have been arrested from different parts of the city in connection with the case including Rakesh Kumar Shah, owner of R.K. Jewellers in Paltan Bazar and Firoz Khan, an employee of the shop.
