GUWAHATI: As the city witnessed huge crowd on the first two days of the Ambubachi festival, the Guwahati Traffic Police Department suddenly decided to divert all vehicles plying from Jalukbari towards Bharalumukh, on Sunday evening.

Vehicles were not allowed to enter city from Jalukbari side taking into consideration the huge rush at Kamakhya area. It was done to regulate the devotees’ movement, to and from the Kamakhya Temple.

Also, the police diverted all vehicles coming from Azara side towards the highway as there was a huge crowd movement in AT Road, especially from Maligaon to Bharalumukh.

Being a Sunday the walking zone routine was also not observed and people were confused as there was no prior notice issued by the administration.

District administration has advised public to take NH 37 while heading towards Airport considering the huge rush at Kamakhya.

Interestingly, the GPlus Facebook poll on traffic management provided relevant insights on what was wrong with the traffic movement in Guwahati.

We had received overwhelming response from our readers who were of the opinion that there was lack of proper planning on the part of the traffic department.

The sample size of the poll had 3,100 respondents of which 71% respondents were of the opinion that traffic police was not able to manage the traffic and only 29% respondents believed that the traffic department was able to handle the situation.

Several citizens condemned the uplanned sudden traffic diversion by Assam Police.
