China has announced its decision to build a hydropower project on the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Zangbo) as per the Chinese government-owned newspaper, Global Times.

The measure has been forwarded in the proposals for formulating the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25).
The initiative has raised concerns from the Indian side of things. As a lower riparian state with considerable established user rights to the waters of the trans-border rivers, the Indian government had earlier urged the Chinese side to ensure that the interests of downstream states are not harmed by any activities in upstream areas.
