Centre may Consider ILP in Assam, Awaits Clause 6 Panel Report

GUWAHATI: The long-pending demand for the introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Assam may come true as the Centre is learnt to be considering the move as the preliminary report of a high-level committee on Assam Accord’s Clause 6 suggests its need.

The 14-member committee headed by B.K. Sharma have suggested the introduction of Inner Line Permit, as well as reservation of seats in the Legislative Assembly and local bodies, and in employment for them.

Meanwhile, a civil society group, Assam Public Works (APW), has submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the High Level Committee, Clause 6 (A) of the Assam Accord 1985, B.K. Sharma and has sought the introduction of “Inner Line Permit” in Assam.

Futher, the civil society, in the interest of the Assamese society at large as well as for the smooth implementation of the Clause 6(A) of the Assam Accord 1985, presented before the committee a probable definition of the word “Assamese” on the basis of a book, “Axomiyar Sangya Bisari” written by one Naba Kumar Deka Baruah and published by the “Asam Sahitya Sabha."
