GUWAHATI: Central intelligence agencies have issued strict alerts to Assam and other northeastern states, warning them of covert operations by Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and its associated groups. The other states are Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.

A senior state intelligence official reportedly confirmed that surveillance efforts have been increased, particularly across regions near the Bangladesh border, in response to recent security developments. "Recent leadership changes in Bangladesh and the release of key JMB figures from prison require heightened alertness," the official reportedly stated, adding that areas close to the border are now under intensified watch.
Bangladesh-based terror groups, especially JMB, continue to target Assam and Tripura, aiming to expand influence in border areas shaped by unique geopolitical and demographic factors. However, Indian intelligence has successfully thwarted many of these efforts in their early stages, preventing substantial infiltration.
Recent arrests include over 450 Bangladeshi nationals and 60 Rohingya detainees in Tripura. Assam authorities reported intercepting about 140 infiltrators, returning them to Bangladesh.
Incidentally, Assam Police’s recent counter-terrorism efforts previously led to the arrest of several suspects linked to the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). In 2022, the police had detained around 46 operatives and dismantled five terror modules.
